How Do You Know , On the Evidence of True Faith and the Judgment of Love

We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not his brother abideth in death. (1 John 3:14, KJV)

English

Dear little children, I am John, the disciple whom Jesus loved.

I write this letter as a very old man. Peter was martyred, Paul was martyred, the other apostles have all departed , now I alone remain. False teachers have appeared in the churches, preaching another gospel, troubling the faith of brothers and sisters. Many come to me asking: John, how can I know I am truly saved? How can I discern who is a true believer and who is false?

This is precisely why I wrote my first epistle: "These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life." (1 John 5:13). I want to give you assurance , not vague hope, but solid assurance.

First, Get the Cause and Effect Right , Fruit Is Evidence, Not a Condition

Before I discuss the marks of true faith, I must clarify one thing, lest you fall into the trap of legalism.

We are not saved because we bear fruit; we bear fruit because we are saved. The Lord Jesus said, "A good tree bringeth forth good fruit." (Matt 7:17). Note the order: first the life of a good tree, then good fruit. The tree does not become good by bearing fruit; it bears fruit because it is good.

Therefore, the five marks I discuss below are all evidence of grace, not conditions for grace. You are saved by faith alone, by grace alone , brother Paul said this a thousand times. Fruit is the result of grace at work in your life. If you treat fruit as a condition, you will live in fear rather than assurance; you will constantly ask "Am I doing enough?" instead of looking to Christ and saying "What He did for me is enough."

With this clear, we can discuss fruit with peace of heart.

The First Mark: The Fruit of the Spirit , Gradual Change of Character

Brother Paul listed the fruit of the Spirit: "love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance." (Gal 5:22-23). Note: these are not nine fruits but nine facets of one fruit. The Spirit working in a person's life gradually produces these qualities.

The key word is "gradually." Sanctification is a lifelong process, not overnight perfection. I followed the Lord for three years, saw His glory with my own eyes, yet I am still growing to this day. You need not be perfect in every quality; what you need is direction , are you more patient than last year? More kind than five years ago? If so, even if progress is slow, that is evidence the Spirit is at work.

The Second Mark: A Repentant Heart , Genuine Sorrow Over Sin

"If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness." (1 John 1:8-9).

A true believer is not someone who never sins but someone who repents after sinning. What distinguishes true repentance from false? False repentance fears punishment , "What if I get caught?" True repentance grieves over offending God , "How then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?" (Gen 39:9).

I have witnessed the deepest repentance. The night Peter denied the Lord three times, the Lord turned and looked at him , just that one glance, and Peter went out and wept bitterly (Luke 22:61-62). David committed adultery and murder, yet when the prophet Nathan confronted him, he immediately said, "I have sinned against the LORD." (2 Sam 12:13). They committed great sins, but their repentance was real, swift, and thorough. The mark of a true believer is not sinlessness but the inability to rest in sin , conscience will not let him be at peace until he returns to God and confesses.

The Third Mark: Love for the Brethren , The Mark of Passing from Death to Life

"We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren." (1 John 3:14). Little children, this is the mark I value most. If you remember only one thing from this letter, remember this.

But the love I speak of is not a feeling of fondness. There may be brothers in the church you do not naturally like , different personalities, different backgrounds, different habits. But love is not liking; love is action: "My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth." (1 John 3:18). When you see a brother in need and reach out to help, when you see a brother stumble and lift him up, when you see a brother suffering and weep with him , that is evidence of love.

Does your heart carry concern for the brothers and sisters in your church? Does their joy bring you gladness, their suffering bring you sorrow? If so, that is the mark of passing from death to life.

The Fourth Mark: The Direction of Obedience , Not Perfection but Orientation

"And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments. He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him." (1 John 2:3-4).

These words sound severe, but notice the word "keep." It does not mean flawlessly, without exception, executing every commandment , if that were the standard, no one would know God. It speaks of life's direction. A person may fall a hundred times, but if each time he rises and continues walking, his direction is right. A true believer's life is like a winding but overall upward line , there are valleys, there are detours, but the general direction is toward God.

Conversely, an unbeliever may occasionally do good deeds, yet the overall direction of his life is away from God. Direction matters more than speed.

The Fifth Mark: Perseverance to the End , Time Is the Most Honest Witness

"They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would no doubt have continued with us: but they went out, that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us." (1 John 2:19).

I have seen many who were fervent at first, grew cold, and eventually departed. This grieves me, but it also teaches me: perseverance to the end is the ultimate mark of true faith. Not by one's own willpower , whose willpower can last a lifetime? , but by God preserving His people to the end. The perseverance of the saints is, in essence, the perseverance of God: "Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ." (Phil 1:6).

Then, Can We Judge Whether Others Are Reborn?

Little children, this is where the greatest caution is needed. The Lord said, "Ye shall know them by their fruits." (Matt 7:16), but this was primarily about discerning false prophets and false teachers, not for us to casually judge a brother's soul.

"For the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart." (1 Sam 16:7). Ultimate judgment belongs to God. We should hold charitable hope for our brothers , "Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things." (1 Cor 13:7). Unless there is obvious, persistent, unrepentant sin, we should not hastily judge someone's state of salvation.

Let me tell you a story I witnessed. The night Peter denied the Lord three times , if you had been in that courtyard, watching Peter cursing and swearing to the servant girl, "I know not the man!" , how would you have judged him? You would surely have said: This man is no true believer. But you would have been wrong. Peter was a true believer who temporarily fell in extreme terror. The risen Lord, on the shore of Tiberias, three times asked him, "Lovest thou me?" , and three times restored him. We cannot define a brother's entire life by his weakest moment.

Live in Assurance, Walk in Love

Little children, I write these things not to make you anxiously self-examine, but to set your hearts at rest. Assurance ultimately comes not from your performance but from God's promises and the Spirit's internal witness , "The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God." (Rom 8:16).

Self-examination is for gratitude, not fear. When you see the Spirit's fruit in your life, a repentant heart, love for your brothers, you should not say "I'm still not good enough" but rather "Thank You, Lord, Your grace is at work in me."

As for how you view your brothers , look with love, not with judgment. "There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear." (1 John 4:18).

Little children, let us love one another, for love is of God.
