1 John revolves around two core declarations, "God is light" (1:5) and "God is love" (4:8), using them to test true and false faith. First, walking in the light. "God is light, and in him is no darkness at all" (1:5). "If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie" (1:6). John's logic is simple: if you claim to know God yet live in sin, you are a liar. Those truly in fellowship with God walk in light, not that they never sin, but that sin is not their lifestyle, and "if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins" (1:9). Second, God is love. "He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love" (4:8). "Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins" (4:10). Love does not originate from humans, human love is conditional, changeable, exhaustible. God's love is unconditional, initiating, sacrificial. "We love him, because he first loved us" (4:19), human love is a response to God's love, not the prime mover. Third, standards of testing. John gives three tests for genuine faith: doctrinal (believing Jesus is the Christ come in the flesh, 4:2), moral (practicing righteousness, not making sin a lifestyle, 3:9), and relational (loving the brethren, 3:14). "If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar" (4:20).
