Hebrews is one of the most theologically profound books in the New Testament. Its central theme is the supremacy of Christ — He surpasses all of the Old Testament's mediatorial institutions, being "better." Written to Hebrew Christians facing persecution and in danger of returning to Judaism, the letter argues systematically: Christ is the High Priest whose once-for-all sacrifice is eternally effective, and the Old Testament's priestly system has fulfilled its mission of pointing to Christ. Hebrews is the New Testament's most systematic argument for Christ's superiority over every Old Testament institution — He is greater than angels, Moses, Joshua, and Aaron. First, the superior High Priest. "Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec" (5:6). The Aaronic priesthood was temporary — priests died and needed replacement; they themselves were sinful and had to offer sacrifices for themselves first. But Christ "ever liveth" (7:25), "holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens" (7:26). He needed not "daily to offer up sacrifice... for this he did once, when he offered up himself" (7:27). Christ's priesthood is eternal, perfect, and accomplished once for all. Second, the superior sacrifice. "Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God" (9:14). Old Testament offerings — the blood of bulls and goats — "can never take away sins" (10:4), being only "a shadow of good things to come" (10:1). Christ, with His own blood, "entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us" (9:12). Hebrews' most central message: the entire Old Testament sacrificial system pointed to Christ, was fulfilled in Christ, and after Christ no other sacrifice is needed. Third, the better covenant. "Now hath he obtained a more excellent ministry, by how much also he is the mediator of a better covenant" (8:6). Hebrews extensively quotes Jeremiah 31:31-34's new covenant prophecy — God will write His law upon the heart and remember sins no more. The old covenant was shadow; the new is substance. The old was promise; the new is fulfillment. Fourth, the hall of faith and the call to run. "Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith" (12:1-2). The faith heroes of chapter 11 — Abel, Enoch, Noah, Abraham, Moses — all "died in faith, not having received the promises" (11:13). Their faith was not believing because they saw, but "the evidence of things not seen" (11:1).
