2 Samuel records David's forty-year reign (c. 1010–970 BC), Israel's golden age yet also one of its most painful. David was "a man after God's own heart," but he was not perfect — his greatness and his failure are equally profound, his repentance and suffering equally real. Its 24 chapters divide into four sections: David's rise (ch. 1–10), David's sin (ch. 11–12), suffering in David's house (ch. 13–20), and an appendix (ch. 21–24). The core of 2 Samuel is the Davidic Covenant (ch. 7) — God's promise that David's offspring would sit on the throne forever. This promise runs through the prophetic books and finds its ultimate fulfillment in Christ.

Second Samuel revolves around one central event: the Davidic covenant (ch. 7). This covenant not only shaped Israel's history but forms the foundation of the entire messianic hope. First, the Davidic covenant — the promise of an eternal kingdom. "Thine house and thy kingdom shall be established for ever before thee: thy throne shall be established for ever" (7:16). David wanted to build a house for God, but God instead promised to build David a "house" (dynasty). This covenant is unconditional — depending not on the performance of David's descendants but on God's faithfulness. Even when Solomon sinned, God said "my mercy shall not depart away from him" (7:15). In Luke 1:32-33, the angel told Mary, "The Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David... and of his kingdom there shall be no end" — Christ is the ultimate fulfillment of the Davidic covenant. Second, even kings are under the law. David's sin with Bathsheba (ch. 11-12) is the book's theological turning point. The king sinned — murder and adultery; Israel's greatest king was not above God's law. Nathan's accusation, "Thou art the man!" (12:7), established a fundamental principle: before God, no one has immunity. The Reformed tradition particularly emphasizes this — "Lex Rex" (the law is king), not "Rex Lex" (the king is law). Third, the intergenerational transmission of sin. After David's adultery, his family descended into a chain reaction of tragedy: Amnon violated Tamar, Absalom killed Amnon and then rebelled, Adonijah contested the throne. "The sword shall never depart from thine house" (12:10) — the consequences of sin do not vanish because forgiveness has been granted. Grace pardons sin's penalty, but sin's consequences continue to operate in history. This is the most powerful rebuttal of "cheap grace." Fourth, Psalm 51 — the paradigm of repentance. After Nathan's confrontation, David wrote Psalm 51: "Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me" (Ps 51:10). This psalm became the classic expression of repentance in all of Scripture. David made no excuses, shifted no blame, but fully acknowledged his sin — "Against thee, thee only, have I sinned" (51:4). True repentance is not regret at being caught but grief at having offended a holy God.
