路得记导读

A Guide to the Book of Ruth

Ruth is one of the most exquisitely crafted short narratives in the Old Testament — four chapters telling the story of an ordinary person in the time of the judges, yet a microcosm of the entire history of redemption. Sandwiched between the darkness of Judges and the kingdom of Samuel, it blooms like a flower in the desert, with the themes of faithfulness, lovingkindness (Hebrew חֶסֶד, hesed), and divine providence. Ruth's theological contributions are threefold: first, it reveals that God's hesed extends not only to Israelites but to Gentiles (Ruth was a Moabite). Second, it presents the theology of "kinsman-redeemer" (goel), foreshadowing Christ's redemption. Third, Ruth's entry into David's genealogy proves that salvation has never been ethnic — God chooses anyone who truly trusts in Him.

核心神学:神的护理与忠诚之爱

Core Theology: Providence and Covenant Love

The book of Ruth never explicitly mentions a miracle or vision, yet God's providential hand is visible on every page. Ruth "happened to come" to the portion of the field belonging to Boaz (2:3) — this "happened" translates the Hebrew מִקְרֶה (miqreh), meaning "chance occurrence," but the author uses the word with irony: under God's governance, there is no true chance. The book's keyword is חֶסֶד (hesed) — typically translated "lovingkindness" or "steadfast love." Naomi uses the word twice: once commending Ruth's hesed toward her mother-in-law (1:8), and once praising Boaz's hesed toward them (2:20). In the Old Testament this word describes both human loyal love and God's covenant love toward Israel. Ruth's faithfulness to Naomi ("whither thou goest, I will go," 1:16) is hesed's most beautiful human expression, reflecting God's own unchanging covenant love for His people. Ruth also carries a breakthrough theological message: salvation is not limited to Israelites. Ruth the Moabite — a Gentile, a widow, a poor woman — through faith and faithfulness was not merely accepted but entered the Messianic genealogy. God's grace has no ethnic boundary. This prefigures the New Testament era: through Christ, "there is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus" (Gal 3:28, KJV).
