Daniel is the representative work of Old Testament apocalyptic literature (12 chapters), recording Daniel's approximately seventy years of experience and visions in the Babylonian and Persian courts. The book divides into: narratives (ch. 1–6) showing examples of maintaining faith in a foreign land; visions (ch. 7–12) revealing the rise and fall of world empires and God's kingdom's ultimate triumph. Daniel's core message is God's absolute sovereignty — He governs the rise and fall of nations, the course of history, and the end of the age. Whether in a fiery furnace, a lions' den, or amid empires' succession, "the God of heaven" remains on His throne.

Daniel is one of the most unique books of the Old Testament, combining court narratives with apocalyptic visions. Its core message is: no matter how powerful earthly empires may be, God is the true King of history. First, God rules over all nations. In Nebuchadnezzar's dream (ch. 2), the four metals of the great image represent four world empires, but a stone "cut out without hands" smashed the entire image (2:34-35). This stone represents God's kingdom — "which shall stand for ever" (2:44). The prophecy of seventy weeks (9:24-27) even more precisely foretells the timing of the Messiah's coming. Daniel teaches us: empires rise and fall, regimes change, all under God's control. "He changeth the times and the seasons: he removeth kings, and setteth up kings" (2:21) — no human power falls outside the scope of God's sovereignty. Second, the furnace and the lions' den — the cost of faith. The response of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego is the book's most moving declaration of faith: "Our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace... But if not, be it known unto thee, O king, that we will not serve thy gods" (3:17-18). "But if not" — true faith is not conditioned on outcomes. They refused to worship the image not because they were certain God would deliver but because even if He did not, the idol was still unworthy of worship. Daniel's experience in the lions' den likewise demonstrates: faithfulness to God may mean losing everything, but God is present in the fire, in the pit, and in death itself. Third, the vision of the Son of Man. "I saw in the night visions, and, behold, one like the Son of man came with the clouds of heaven, and came to the Ancient of days... And there was given him dominion, and glory, and a kingdom, that all people, nations, and languages, should serve him" (7:13-14). Jesus's most common self-designation was "Son of Man" — taken directly from Daniel 7. This "Son of Man" is both fully human ("one like the Son of man") and possesses divine authority ("came with the clouds of heaven"). Daniel's vision reveals the Messiah's dual nature — truly God and truly man. Fourth, the wise who endure to the end. "They that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament; and they that turn many to righteousness as the stars for ever and ever" (12:3). Daniel's ultimate hope is not in this life but the next — with bodily resurrection (12:2, "many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake") and eternal reward. This is one of the clearest Old Testament revelations of resurrection and eternal life.
