A Guide to Genesis

Genesis is the first book of the Bible, recording history from the creation of heaven and earth to the death of Joseph in Egypt. Its 50 chapters address humanity's most fundamental questions: Where did all things come from? Why do humans exist? How did sin enter the world? How did God unfold His plan of redemption? Moses wrote this book in the Sinai wilderness to establish a foundation of faith for the Israelites who had just left Egypt — to know the one Creator and to understand His covenant of grace with Abraham's descendants.

Key Verse

Core Theology: The Origin of Covenant and Promise

Genesis is the theological foundation of the entire Bible. It answers the most fundamental questions: Where did the world come from? Why do humans suffer? Where is hope? First, the doctrine of creation. "In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth" (Gen 1:1) — this one sentence establishes the entire biblical worldview: God is self-existent and eternal, all things are created, and creation proceeds from God's sovereign will rather than necessity. Humanity was made in God's image (1:26–27), hence possessing dignity, moral responsibility, and the capacity for communion with God. The Westminster Shorter Catechism Q1, "What is the chief end of man?" — answered, "To glorify God, and to enjoy him forever" — is built upon Genesis's doctrine of creation. Second, the fall and original sin. The narrative of chapter 3 is the source of all human tragedy. Adam, as the representative of all humanity (the "covenant head"), brought sin into the world through his disobedience, and all bear sin's consequences. Paul states in Romans 5:12, "by one man sin entered into the world" — this is the theology of Genesis 3. Yet within the very judgment God gave a promise: "the seed of the woman shall bruise the serpent's head" (3:15), called the protevangelium (the first gospel), the seed of the entire history of redemption. Third, covenant theology. Genesis records God's covenant with Noah ("I will not again curse the ground," 9:11) and the Abrahamic covenant ("I will make of thee a great nation," 12:2). The Abrahamic covenant is the central hinge of the Bible's covenant theology — land, offspring, blessing to all nations. Galatians 3:8 says, "the scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the heathen through faith, preached before the gospel unto Abraham" — the Abrahamic covenant is the gospel foretold. Fourth, divine providence and redemption. Joseph's words summarize the theological essence of Genesis: "ye thought evil against me; but God meant it unto good, to bring to pass, as it is this day, to save much people alive" (50:20). Human evil is transformed under God's sovereignty into an instrument of redemption — a rehearsal of the cross.
