Ecclesiastes (Hebrew Qoheleth, "the Preacher") is the most distinctive book of Old Testament wisdom literature, traditionally attributed to Solomon in his later years. Its 12 chapters begin with "Vanity of vanities" and end with "Fear God, and keep his commandments" — a journey from life's perplexity to faith's certainty. The key words are "vanity" (hevel, appearing 38 times) and "under the sun" (appearing 29 times). The Preacher observes life from a purely "under the sun" perspective — labor, pleasure, wisdom, wealth — finding everything ungraspable. But this is precisely his message: apart from God, life truly is vanity; returning to God, everything gains meaning.

Ecclesiastes is the most "modern" book of the Bible — its existential questioning remains startling after more than two millennia. "Vanity of vanities; all is vanity" (1:2) — this is not a declaration of despair but an honest diagnosis. First, the qualifier "under the sun." "Vanity" (Hebrew הֶבֶל, hevel) appears 38 times, but always accompanied by a crucial qualifier — "under the sun" (1:3, 2:11, etc.). The Preacher does not say life itself is meaningless but that apart from God, viewed solely from a human perspective ("under the sun"), all pursuits ultimately amount to vanity. Wisdom, wealth, pleasure, fame — none can give lasting satisfaction. This is the most thorough critique of all human self-salvation efforts and paves the way for the gospel: if meaning cannot be found "under the sun," it must come from "above the sun." Second, death — the ultimate equalizer. "All things come alike to all: there is one event to the righteous, and to the wicked" (9:2). The Preacher repeatedly emphasizes that death relativizes all human distinctions — the wise and the foolish alike die; the rich and the poor alike return to dust. This is not nihilism but the most effective antidote to human pride. Only by acknowledging the reality of death will people seriously contemplate eternity — "he hath set the world [eternity] in their heart" (3:11). Third, "no man can find out the work that God maketh." "He hath made every thing beautiful in his time: also he hath set the world in their heart, so that no man can find out the work that God maketh from the beginning to the end" (3:11). The human heart longs for eternity yet cannot satisfy that longing on its own — a perfect description of the human predicament. Augustine said "Thou hast made us for Thyself, and our hearts are restless till they rest in Thee" — Ecclesiastes is the Old Testament version of that statement. Fourth, the conclusion's destination. "Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man" (12:13). After twelve chapters of exploration and questioning, the Preacher's conclusion is not nihilism but a return to the foundation of faith — the fear of God. This echoes Proverbs 1:7: the beginning and end of all wisdom is the fear of the LORD.
