Why doesn't God answer my prayers? How does God respond to prayer?

简答 Short Answer

God always responds to prayer, but not always as we expect. His responses come in three forms: 'Yes' — granting what you ask; 'No' — because He has a better plan; 'Wait' — the timing isn't right. Each flows from His perfect love and wisdom.

Detailed Answer

Many think unanswered prayer means God isn't responding. But God always responds — just in different ways:

First: Yes. God grants what we ask. Elijah prayed for fire from heaven on Mount Carmel, and God answered (1 Kings 18:37-38). Hezekiah prayed in severe illness, and God added fifteen years (2 Kings 20:5-6). When our requests align with God's will, He delights to give. 'If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it' (John 14:14).

Second: No. God refuses our request because He knows what's truly beneficial. Paul asked three times for God to remove his thorn; God said 'No' — 'My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness' (2 Cor 12:8-9). Moses asked to enter the Promised Land; God said 'No' (Deut 3:26). God's refusal isn't indifference but deeper love. A good father won't give a child a knife as a toy, even when the child cries for it.

Third: Wait. God's timetable differs from ours. Abraham waited twenty-five years for the promised son Isaac. Joseph waited thirteen years from being sold to being exalted. David was anointed but waited many years before ascending the throne. The psalmist says: 'I waited patiently for the LORD; he inclined to me and heard my cry' (Ps 40:1). Waiting is not wasted time but God's workshop for shaping our faith and character.

Additionally, Scripture mentions factors that may hinder prayer: unrepented sin (Isa 59:2), wrong motives (James 4:3), unforgiveness (Mark 11:25), and unbelief (James 1:6-7). This doesn't mean God holds grudges but that sin disrupts communication with Him.

Whatever God's response, He loves us. 'If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him?' (Matt 7:11). Trust God's wisdom, even when we don't yet understand.
