A Guide to 1 Thessalonians

First Thessalonians is the earliest of Paul's epistles, written during his second missionary journey while in Corinth. Paul was forced to leave Thessalonica hastily due to Jewish persecution, and he was deeply concerned about this young church. When Timothy brought back good news, Paul joyfully wrote this letter to encourage them to persevere in faith amid persecution and to answer their questions about the Lord's return and the fate of deceased believers.

Core Theology: The Lord Will Return — A Living Hope

1 Thessalonians is one of Paul's earliest letters; its core theme is how the hope of Christ's return shapes present living. First, the Lord Himself shall descend. "For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord" (4:16-17). Paul wrote this to comfort Thessalonians grieving for deceased believers — death is not the end but the prelude to meeting the Lord. Second, hope shapes living. "Wherefore comfort yourselves together, and edify one another" (5:11). Eschatological hope does not produce passive waiting but active holiness and love. "This is the will of God, even your sanctification" (4:3). Because the Lord is coming, every present day carries eternal significance. Third, "Rejoice evermore. Pray without ceasing. In every thing give thanks" (5:16-18). These three commands are 1 Thessalonians' essence — joy is independent of circumstances (the Thessalonian church was under persecution), prayer is not confined to specific moments, thanksgiving encompasses every situation. This is "the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you" (5:18).
