Ephesians (6 chapters) is one of Paul's "prison epistles" (c. AD 60–62), considered his most mature theological expression. Ephesians teaches: the church is not a human organization but Christ's body, the center of God's eternal plan.

Ephesians has been called "the crown of the epistles" — Paul's most profound exposition of the church's nature. First, "in Christ." This is Ephesians' key phrase, appearing over thirty times. "Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ" (1:3). Every spiritual blessing — election, predestination, redemption, forgiveness, sealing — is given to believers "in Christ." The believer's identity depends not on personal performance but on union with Christ. Second, by grace through faith. "For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God" (2:8). This verse is the most concise summary of Reformed soteriology — salvation is entirely the work of grace; even faith itself is God's gift, not self-generated. "Not of works, lest any man should boast" (2:9). Third, the church is Christ's body. "The church, which is his body, the fulness of him that filleth all in all" (1:23). Ephesians defines the church not as an organization or institution but as a living organism — Christ is the head, believers are the members. "The whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part" (4:16). The church's unity is not artificial uniformity but living connection in Christ. Fourth, spiritual warfare. "For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places" (6:12). The Christian's battle is not political struggle or culture war but spiritual warfare. God provides the full armor — truth, righteousness, the gospel of peace, faith, salvation, the sword of the Spirit (6:14-17) — each piece connected to Christ's work.
