A Guide to Galatians

Galatians (6 chapters) is Paul's most forceful epistle (c. AD 49), battling for the truth of justification by faith. The Galatian churches had been influenced by Judaizers who demanded that Gentile believers be circumcised and keep the law for salvation. Paul vehemently refutes this 'other gospel,' declaring justification by faith in Christ alone. The book divides into three sections: personal defense (ch. 1-2), theological argument (ch. 3-4), and practical application (ch. 5-6). 'I am crucified with Christ' (2:20) and 'the fruit of the Spirit' (5:22-23) are its most famous verses.

Core Theology: Freedom in Christ — No Longer Justified by the Law

Galatians was called by Luther "my Katie" (his wife's name) and is one of the Reformation's most important biblical foundations. First, grace alone. "A man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ" (2:16). The Galatian churches had been influenced by false teachers claiming that faith in Christ required circumcision and Mosaic law observance for salvation. Paul's response was fierce: "O foolish Galatians!" (3:1). Grace with any conditions added ceases to be grace — "if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain" (2:21). Second, freedom in Christ. "Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage" (5:1). Christian freedom is not license but liberation from legalistic bondage to live by the Spirit. "For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another" (5:13). Third, the fruit of the Spirit. "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance" (5:22-23). Note it is "fruit" (singular), not "fruits" — these nine qualities are one unified whole, nine facets of the same fruit the Spirit produces in the believer's life. The law cannot produce these qualities; only the Spirit's indwelling can.
