Philippians (4 chapters) was written by Paul from a Roman prison to the Philippian church (c. AD 61). Philippi was the first European church Paul founded (Acts 16) and his closest congregation. The theme is joy — not because circumstances are good but because of being in Christ. Paul wrote the New Testament's most joyful letter from prison, proving joy does not depend on circumstances.

Key Verse

Core Theology: Joy in Christ and the Mind of Humility

Philippians was written from prison, yet it is Paul's most joyful letter — "joy" appears sixteen times. First, the hymn of Christ's humiliation. "Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men... he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross" (2:6-8). This "Christ Hymn" (Carmen Christi) is one of the New Testament's most important Christological texts. Christ was not forced into humiliation but voluntarily emptied Himself — this defines all truly great leadership: downward, from fullness to emptiness, from glory to the cross. Second, knowing Christ as supreme treasure. "I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ" (3:8). Paul was not a failure consoling himself — he had possessed the most enviable religious credentials (3:4-6). But after knowing Christ, everything became "dung" — not because the world became worse, but because Christ is so surpassingly good that everything else pales. Third, contentment in every circumstance. "Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content. I know both how to be abased, and I know how to abound... I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me" (4:11-13). Contentment is not an innate disposition but a "learned" lesson; strength comes not from self but from "Christ which strengtheneth me.
