A Guide to Romans

Romans (16 chapters) is Paul's letter to the Roman church (c. AD 57), widely recognized as Scripture's most systematic theological work. Martin Luther discovered "justification by faith" in Romans, sparking the sixteenth-century Reformation; John Wesley's heart was "strangely warmed" reading Romans, launching the Methodist movement. The book's logical chain: all are sinners (ch. 1–3) → justification by faith alone (ch. 3–5) → sanctification: new life in Christ (ch. 6–8) → God's sovereignty and Israel's future (ch. 9–11) → the saints' practical life (ch. 12–16).

Key Verse

"There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus." (Romans 8:1)

Core Theology: Justification by Faith — A Systematic Exposition of the Gospel

Romans is the pinnacle of Pauline theology; Luther called it "the most important book in the New Testament, the purest gospel." First, all are under sin. Romans 1-3 is Scripture's most systematic analysis of human sinfulness. Gentile sin (1:18-32): "when they knew God, they glorified him not as God"; Jewish sin (2:1-3:8): possessing the law but failing to keep it. The conclusion is devastating: "There is none righteous, no, not one" (3:10). The Reformed doctrine of Total Depravity is grounded here — not that humans are as bad as possible, but that sin contaminates every dimension of human existence. Second, justification by faith. "A man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law" (3:28). Justification (δικαίωσις) is not "making righteous" but "declaring righteous" — a forensic verdict, not a moral transformation. Abraham was counted righteous by faith before circumcision (4:9-12), proving justification is not by works. "There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus" (8:1) — this is the Christian's most certain comfort. Third, new life in Christ. Romans 6-8 unfolds life after justification. "Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? God forbid" (6:1-2) — justification is not a license to sin but the beginning of new life. Chapter 7 honestly describes the believer's inner struggle: "For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do" (7:19) — the experience of every true believer. Chapter 8 concludes with triumphant declaration: "Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?... nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God" (8:35-39). Fourth, God's sovereignty and human responsibility. Romans 9-11 addresses divine election and Israel's destiny — the most concentrated discussion of predestination in all of Scripture. "Even so then at this present time also there is a remnant according to the election of grace" (11:5). Yet Paul simultaneously insists on human responsibility: "Whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved" (10:13). God's sovereignty and human responsibility are not contradictory but harmonious within mystery — "O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out!" (11:33).
