Does believing in Jesus mean I can't drink or enjoy life?

简答 Short Answer

Christianity is not asceticism. Jesus turned water into wine at Cana. Paul said everything God created is good. Christianity opposes not enjoyment but being enslaved by it — temperance is not prohibition.

Detailed Answer

This is a very common misconception. Many assume faith means saying goodbye to all joy, living like an ascetic monk. But Scripture teaches the opposite.

First, God created good things for human enjoyment. 'God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good' (Gen 1:31). Food, wine, music, nature, friendship, marital intimacy — all are God's gifts. Paul says: 'Everything created by God is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving' (1 Tim 4:4).

Second, Jesus Himself was no ascetic. He turned water into wine at Cana (John 2:1-11) — the finest wine. He attended feasts and ate with tax collectors and sinners. The Pharisees criticized Him as 'a glutton and a drunkard' (Luke 7:34). If Christianity were ascetic, Jesus would be the first violator.

Third, Christianity opposes being enslaved by pleasure, not pleasure itself. 'All things are lawful for me, but I will not be dominated by anything' (1 Cor 6:12). Drinking isn't sin; drunkenness is (Eph 5:18). Enjoying food isn't sin; gluttony is. Enjoying wealth isn't sin; loving money is (1 Tim 6:10). The line: are you enjoying it, or is it controlling you?

Fourth, Christianity offers deeper joy, not joylessness. Jesus said: 'I came that they may have life and have it abundantly' (John 10:10). Christians don't have less happiness but gain a peace and joy the world can't give — 'Though you have not seen him, you love him. Though you do not now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory' (1 Pet 1:8).

Faith doesn't mean losing enjoyment but learning to enjoy rightly — with gratitude, in temperance, giving glory to the Giver of all good things.
