Is hell's 'fire' literal fire or metaphor?
简答 Short Answer
Reformed scholars differ on this, but whether literal fire or metaphor, the core truth stands: hell is a terrible state of eternal separation from God, with suffering beyond any physical flame.
Detailed Answer
The Reformed tradition has two main views on hell's fire:
Literal view: Hell's fire is real, physical flame causing real bodily suffering. Supporting texts: thrown into the lake of fire (Rev 20:15), where their worm does not die and the fire is not quenched (Mark 9:48).
Metaphorical view: Fire metaphorically describes hell's suffering, but actual suffering may be worse than physical fire. Calvin leaned this way, saying familiar images describe inconceivable suffering. Notably, Scripture also describes hell as outer darkness (Matt 25:30). Fire and darkness literally contradict but both metaphorically point to extreme suffering.
Regardless of view, several things are certain:
First, hell is real. Not a scare story but a reality Jesus Himself repeatedly warned about.
Second, hell's core suffering is eternal separation from God. God is the source of everything good: love, joy, beauty, meaning, hope. Complete separation from God means complete separation from all good. This is far worse than any physical flame.
Third, hell is eternal. These will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life (Matt 25:46). Jesus uses the same word (eternal) for both heaven and hell.
Fourth, hell's existence deepens the cross's significance. If hell weren't terrible, why would Christ endure such agony to save us from it? The cross's cost reveals hell's reality and severity.
